The mission of the Universal English Center is to equip students of English as a Second Language with the language and cultural skills they will need tobe successful in academic, social and professional environments in the United States. Students learn and practice English communication skills in a variety of ways. The aim of each course is to develop in our students greater fluency, accuracy and self-confidence in their command of English.

COURSES

UEC offers a variety of full-time and part-time courses which meet during the day, evening, and on weekends. At each level, full-time students study 20 hours a week for twelve weeks. They study reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

PLACEMENT

All new students must take a placement test before they begin their courses. The test includes listening comprehension, grammar and writing.

CLASS SIZE

UEC class size ranges from 10 to 22 students. Most classes have between 10 and 15 students.

PAYMENT

Students can pay their tuition by check, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard and American Express)

REFUND

Refunds will be considered only if there is sufficient reason for an official withdrawal. UEC reserves the right to request evidence of circumstances related to the withdrawal. Failure to attend class does not constitute grounds for withdrawal, nor does informing the teacher. A student who cannot continue to study must come in person to the office and fill out a refund request form. A student in F-1 status must inform a UEC advisor of his intent to withdraw from classes. A full refund of tuition, less registration fee, will be made if the refund request is made before the first class meeting, or if a request for a student visa is denied.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

A student is required to report any change of address to an office assistant.

CERTIFICATES

In order to receive a certificate, A student must attend at least 80% of their classes and receive a passing grade (A, B, C are passing grades), No certificates, transcripts, or school letters can be issued if a student has an outstanding balance at the end of the term.

ABSENCE DUE TO SICKNESS

If a student is seriously ill or hospitalized, and cannot continue taking classes, he or she must submit a letter explaining their situation from a doctor or a hospital invoice.

COURSES GRADES

Passing grades A Completion of course with high proficiency
B Completion of course with average proficiency
C Completion of course with low proficiency
Non-passing grades R Repeat course with very low proficiency
F Repeat course due to poor attendance

TRANSFER OUT

A student who wants to transfer to another school must complete at least 24 weeks (2 quarters) of study with passing grades.
